the Vote is in, and the Winner is…

In mid-February, Great River Federal Credit Union announced its decision to award three grants every quarter to community nominated non-profit organizations. Community residents of all ages were encouraged to vote online at the Great River web page for their first choice, once per day per household for two weeks. The first place winner would receive a grant of $2,500, and the two
runners-up would receive grants of $500 each.

Voting ended on February 28th, and the excitement was palpable when the staff at Foley Area C.A.R.E. received a call from Mary Jo Schepers at Great River Federal Credit Union announcing that C.A.R.E. had been awarded the $2,500 grant, as the non-profit with the most votes.

Foley Area C.A.R.E. staff and members of the Board of Directors and their spouses, attended a dinner celebrating the retirement of Pastor Al Jergenson, at Coyote Moon Grille on September 22nd.

In 2002 Pastor Al was a member of the steering committee, and became the first chairman of the Board of Directors of the newly formed Foley Area C.A.R.E. Program. Carol Mersinger, Director of the CROSS Center in Foley, served with Pastor Al in those early days on the steering committee and told us, “He is a visionary who understood how a program like this could benefit and grow in this community”. Volunteer Appreciation Dinner “Celebrating You!”

Foley Area C.A.R.E. volunteers, staff, and board members gathered at the First Presbyterian Church in Foley on Thursday, July 27, 2017 for our annual volunteer appreciation dinner.

Pastor Al Jergenson and Dennis Clark barbecued hamburgers, while staff and other board members served volunteers at the build-a-burger buffet. The room was filled with laughter and chatter, as the children of the Brian and Paula Lorenz family bused tables and served beverages and desserts.

Our guest speaker was Krisie Barron, a licensed social worker, who spoke to our group about “Normal Aging/Not Normal Aging as it Pertains to Alzheimer’s”. Her interactive presentation included valuable information for current caregivers, respite caregivers, and advance planning for those of us who may need help in the future...

Free Food, All Year ‘Round, For Seniors in Benton County

The Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS) is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Bill. This program, based on household size and income, will provide a 30-35 pound box of food every month to seniors aged 60 years and older who qualify:

    • Canned fruits packed in juice or light syrup; Canned vegetables with low sodium; Bottled 100% juice
    • Nonfat dry and shelf stable low fat milk, low fat American cheese
    • Canned meat like chicken, beef stew, chili or tuna, and peanut butter or dry beans
    • Cereal & rice or pasta

Theft is consistently among the top five most reported crimes in Benton County. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to help prevent becoming a victim of theft. Theft is often a crime of opportunity. A thief sees something of value left unattended or unsecured and steals it.
